There are more than a million adults in the United States who deal with eczema that’s not under control and is moderate to severe, or that have atopic dermatitis. If you are one of these million and haven’t found a solution that works for you, then you’re likely frustrated. The reality is that there are many ineffective eczema options on the market. That’s why you need to work with Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group. We’ll start by assessing your eczema. We can then provide a targeted, personalized plan designed specifically for your needs. A new medication we’ve been working with, called Dupixent, may be a part of your treatment plan. Read on to learn more about it and then reach out to us at 805-658-9500 to set up your appointment.
The way Dupixent works is by inhibiting both interleukin-13 and interleukin-4 from acting. These are proteins and they play a huge role in chronic inflammation – which is part of severe atopic dermatitis. When this treatment reduces the amount that these proteins over signal, the result can be reduced inflammation and clearer skin lesions. We use Dupixent as an alternative treatment to topical immunosuppressants, such as methotrexate and cyclosporine, both of which have been shown to have side effects when used for a long period of time.
If you choose to be administered Dupixent, we will do so via a subcutaneous injection. Once we’ve shown you how to correctly inject this medicine, you’ll be able to inject yourself at home. You’ll get single-dose, pre-filled syringes that don’t require you to measure anything.
How often you’ll need to use this option will vary based on your needs and the way you respond to it. Your allergist will offer you dosage instructions and will adjust as needed. Dupixent can be used on its own or in conjunction with a topical corticosteroid. There are studies that shown that Dupixent injections are most effective in getting rid of skin lesions when its used with topical corticosteroids.
The FDA has approved the use of Dupixent for adults 18 years or older. There have been clinical trials held throughout the world that have shown that it’s effective. As is true with virtually any treatment, there are potential side effects but they are generally mild. Examples include issues at the injection site, allergic reaction, eye issues, and cold sores.
Of course, Dupixent, while an effective treatment for some, isn’t right for everyone. There is no treatment for eczema that works for 100% of people. That’s why it’s best to reach out to Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group at 805-658-9500 to make an appointment.
Our experienced, licensed, and educated allergists and immunologists can assess your unique situation. We can try new methods, new procedures, and new dosages. The reality is that no one should have to live with severe eczema. Let Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group help.
