Common Symptoms of an Egg Allergy

Like most allergies, symptoms can have a wide range of severity. They can usually arise 1 minute to an hour after consuming some form of an egg. If you notice any of these symptoms after eating eggs or something with eggs in it, it is time to consult a specialist:

  • Skin inflammation or hives — the most common egg allergy reaction
  • Nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing (allergic rhinitis)
  • Digestive symptoms, such as cramps, nausea, and vomiting
  • Asthma signs and symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath

In some scenarios, an egg allergy can cause anaphylactic shock which is a life-threatening attack. It is critical to understand the extent of your egg allergy so these symptoms can be easily avoided.

What to Stay Away From

The most obvious answer that should first come to mind is, of course, cooking eggs or with eggs. But the less obvious answer is food that has eggs in it without you knowing. Some food products can be tricky if you don’t do your research. Eggs are a common ingredient in a lot of household food products.

If you’re allergic to eggs, stay away from the following:

  • Spaghetti & Meatballs
  • Fried Chicken
  • Mayonnaise
  • Ice Cream
  • Pastries
  • Hollandaise Sauce
  • Cake w/ Frosting
  • And many more!
