We provide expert interpretations of skin tests to detect many kinds of allergies
Allergy skin testing has been a staple in the allergist’s toolkit since 1860s. This type of test is quick, non-invasive, and reliable when interpreted properly by a professional. At Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology Medical Group, we can provide allergy skin testing to check for:
- Food allergies
- Bee sting allergies
- Pet dander allergies
- Hay fever allergies (dust, pollen, etc.)
- Medication allergies
- Mold allergies
What to Expect from Allergy Skin Testing
Allergy skin testing can be performed right in your allergist’s office, with results available in as little as 15 minutes. There are two main types of skin testing that may be performed: prick testing and intradermal testing. In both cases, a diluted allergen will be introduced into your skin so the doctor can check for any sign of an allergic reaction. Either test is relatively painless. In the case of a prick test the allergen will enter the skin via a pin prick, and in an intradermal test the allergen will be injected just below the skin surface using a needle. In either case, the allergist will watch closely for signs of a small hive or bump at the test site. The size of the bump will provide information about the level of sensitivity. The bump should fade quickly after the test and no other side effects should remain.
Next Steps
After performing allergy skin testing, we must interpret the results based on your case history and allergy symptoms. Then, we can provide any available treatments for the allergy symptoms as well as offer advice on preventative measures that can be taken to help avoid future allergic reactions.
